SWEDISH GEOGRAPHY

Sweden is located in Northern Europe between Finland and Norway. As part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, the northern part of the country lies within the Arctic Circle. Because of this, a majority of the population lives in the southern half of the country.

Sweden is made up of 410,335 sq km of land, and 39,960 sq km of water. For comparison, this is slightly larger than the size of California. Sweden borders the Baltic Sea. Many Swedes live on the coast of the Baltic because of its temperate climate.
SWEDISH CLIMATE
Sweden is long - 1,574 kilometers from its northernmost to its southernmost
point. Because of this, it is generally divided into three regions - the Götaland
in the south, Svealand in the middle, and Norrland in the north. The three
lands of Sweden are divided into provinces and counties.
Götaland has brief, temperate winters. Snow in this region is especially
rare. During the summers, temperatures are usually in the 60s and 70s
during the day. This region is also quite humid.
Cities in Götaland include:
-
Göteborg, Sweden's second largest city with a population of a little over one million people. It is located on Sweden's western coast.
-
Linköping, a University town with a population of around 145,000. It is about a two-hour drive south from Stockholm, Sweden's capital and largest city.
-
Växjö, a city of around 84,000 people, is a small town surrounded by beautiful lakes and castle ruins. It is about a four and a half hour drive from Stockholm.
Just north of Götaland is Svealand. Svealand is usually just a few degrees colder than Götaland. In the winter, temperatures average just a bit below freezing, allowing it to have more snowfall. Because of this, Svealand has many popular ski resorts.
Cities in Svealand include:
-
Stockholm is the largest city in Sweden with over 2 million residents and is also the country’s capital. It is made up of many islands. Although Stockholm has a large population, much of the city and surrounding area is water, giving the city plenty clean air and water. Stockholm is also the economic and cultural center of Sweden, as 1/3 of Sweden's GDP comes from just this city. It is one of the greenest cities in the world and has extensive public transportation.
-
Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city, with around 200,000 residents. Almost exactly an hour long car drive to the north of Stockholm, Uppsala is mostly a university city. In addition to Uppsala University, Uppsala is home to the Uppsala Cathedral, Sweden’s largest church.
-
Västerås is Sweden’s fifth largest city, with a population of a little less than 150,000 people. The city is geographically small and does not generally host many tourists. However, it is only a little over an hour long drive west from Stockholm. While surrounded by beautiful water, it is also a large industrial city.
As the northernmost region of Sweden,
Norrland is sparsely populated. Its winters
are much more severe than the winters
experienced in Norrland or Götaland, as the
winter temperatures last longer due to its
being partially located in the arctic circle.
However, during the region’s short summers,
temperatures can be expected to hover
around 60 degrees, even reaching 80
degrees on a warm day.
Cities in Norrland include:
-
Kiruna is Sweden’s furthest north city. Its population is only around 18,000 people.

The Right of Public Access
Also known as the Freedom to Roam, Sweden's "Right of Public Access" gives people in Sweden the right to explore and camp anywhere except private gardens, agricultural land, and homes. This right is considered by many Swedes to be part of their cultural heritage. It has existed in some form since Medieval times. This supports the study we found that discovered 75% of Swedes participate in outdoor activities.
What does this mean for REI?
Based off of this information, REI seems well suited for relocating to Sweden because of its beautiful weather. Both hiking and skiing, as well as water sports like kayaking, can be done year-round because of Sweden's diverse climate zones.
As for a potential location for an REI in Sweden, the search for a specific property should be limited to Stockholm. As the largest city in Sweden, this is where the most Swedes would have access to the store. Additionally, Stockholm is home to the Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which would allow e-commerce and shipping to happen more easily.
Stockholm is also only a couple hours' drive from a few of Sweden's most popular ski resorts. This means that many of Stockholm's residents ski and have a need for outdoor equipment and that any international visitors to the ski resorts will likely fly through Stockholm.
